چکیده

Genetic variability in 36 populations of Messor structor (Latreille, 1798) from Bulgaria was studied using analysis of two enzymic systems corresponding to four loci (Sod-1, Sod-2, Sod-3 and Me-1). Three of the studied loci were found to be polymorphic. One of them was found to be monomorphic (Sod-3). One to three alleles were detected for the different isozymic systems: one allele at Sod-3 locus (Sod-3100), two alleles at Sod-1 (Sod-1100 and Sod-195) and Sod-2 (Sod-2100 and Sod-297) loci and three alleles at Me-1 locus (Me-1100, Me-198 and Me-196). The observed and expected heterozygosities (Ho and He) ranged from 0.0 to 0.111 and from 0.168 to 0.372, respectively. Allele frequencies of all loci were used to estimate Nei’s (1972) genetic distance, which was found to range from 0.001 (between Boliarino and Lubenova mahala) to 0.462 (between Chirpan and Merichleri). The estimated mean FIS and FST values from isozyme data were 0.8738 and 0.1432, respectively. The Neighbour-joining method and Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean phylogenetic trees were obtained using genetic distance matrix methods. Two of the studied populations were grouped separately in dendrograms as compared to all other populations which formed a large cluster consisting of three sub-clusters.

Inter- and intra-population genetic variability of introduced silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) strains raised in Bulgaria

Article info: Received: 20 November 2012 Accepted: 5 April 2013 ABSTRACT The genetic variability of four populations belonging to two introduced silkworm strains (Bombyx mori L.) of various origins has been studied using isoenzymic analysis of six enzyme systems. Nonspecific esterases, phosphoglucomutase, malate dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase and hexokinase from different...

Catalogue of the ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) of Bulgaria

The present catalogue of the ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) of Bulgaria is made on a base of critical reconsideration of literature (covering the period from 1892 till 2009 and part of 2010) as well as on examination of the authors' and several museum's collections. A lot of data were omitted in the previous Bulgarian monograph on ants, lots of new data were recently added and many important ad...

Foraging behavior in the ant genus Messor (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae)

The genus Messor consists of 113 species of seed harvesting ants that are found in grasslands, semi-arid areas and savannahs in both the Old and New World. A full spectrum of foraging strategies occurs in Messor, ranging from individual to group foraging, with the latter having evolved several times. This paper reviews foraging strategies and the underlying behavioral mechanisms found in specie...

Genetic variability of native populations of Wasmannia Forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and their biogeographical implications.

Wasmannia auropunctata (Roger) and Wasmannia rochai Forel are economically important ants in the Southeast and Southwest regions of Bahia State, Brazil. Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to distinguish and analyze the genetic variability of populations of both species from Ilhéus, Jequié, BA and French Guyana. The genetic distances among W. auropunctata and W.rochai po...

Pygidial gland chemistry and potential alarm-recruitment function in column foraging, but not solitary, Nearctic Messor harvesting ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae: Myrmicinae).

We investigated the role of the pygidial gland on foraging behavior in two ecologically dominant column foraging Nearctic harvesting ants (Messor pergandei and Messor andrei). Using chemical analyses and behavioral tests, we show that n-tridecane is the major biologically active compound of pygidial gland secretions in both species, and that this chemical functions as a powerful alarm-recruitme...
